Bede College

The Origin of the Colleges of St. Hild & St. Bede stems from 1839 when the College of the Venerable Bede was established by the Diocese of Durham. In 1858 the College of St Hild founded. The twain of Bede and Hild were united in 1975.  St. Hild and St. Bede was vested into the ownership of the  University of Durham in 1979 and it is one of the ten Council Colleges of the University.

The College occupies sixteen acres of south facing, sloping ground along the banks of the river Wear. Much of this is in the form of lawns and gardens hedged by woodland to the East. All the main buildings are within five minutes of the city's market place, and all parts of the University can be reached within 30 minutes on foot.

St. Chad's College

We're in the very heart of mediaeval Durham, directly across the street from Durham cathedral. Click here for further details. Groups of 25 to 100 delegates can meet both for day or residential conferences. Everyone can be accommodated on one site in our historic buildings and the whole group can dine together in our elegant dining hall. Larger groups can be accommodated with help from adjacent Colleges, all within a minute's walk of our main building.

St. John's College

St. John's is one of several University colleges who offer Conference facilities in addition to the student accommodation.

It became a full constituent college of the University of Durham in 1923, but remains independent of it both administratively and financially.

Marygate House

A small community/conference centre on Holy island, Northumberland, the ancient seat of Christianity in Northumbria.

Marygate House is situated in Marygate (the main street), opposite the Post Office. (Turn right at the cross-roads at the entrance to the village and Marygate is the last house but one on the left before the end of the road.) The House has a Library, a dining room and a sitting room but no television. There are 21 beds.

Shepherds Dene

Shepherds Dene organises a range of open events throughout the year.  In addition to these open events it welcomes bookings from individuals and groups at other times. The house has 8 single and 12 twin rooms as well as chapel, dining room and 5 separate meeting rooms for groups. The lodge at the top of the drive offers self-catering facilities with 2 twin rooms. A workshop can be made available for activities like woodwork. Shepherds Dene has extensive grounds, which include a reproduction of the medieval labyrinth in the nave of Chartres Cathedral.

Diocesan Youth Hostel

A rugged Youth Hostel managed jointly by the Dioceses of Durham and Newcastle, situated just a few minutes walk away from the Village Centre and sea front at Seahouses, a Northumberland Fishing Village. Bamburgh, Holy Island and other coastal villages are within easy reach. 

Primarily though not exclusively for the use of young [people from the Dioceses of Newcastle and Durham and available for weekend, mid-week or weekly bookings by parish youth groups, pre and post confirmation classes, Sunday schools, uniformed organisations and schools. The new self contained hall is now available to schools and parishes making day visits in the area.
