Evangelism for your parish - now

The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games provide once in a lifetime opportunities for churches to engage with an event of major significance and celebration.

Eight out of ten people in the UK normally watch the Olympics, but it could be nine out of ten with the Games being held in London. Newcastle is one of the hosting venues for the football, but for most people, the games will be as close as the nearest TV set.

As a generous, open and engaged diocese, we need to play our part in this national celebration and the unique opportunities that will be coming to Newcastle. The torch relay route goes through many of our parishes; from the 21st July onwards. 1000 Norwegian Christian Young People will be working alongside churches across the region. Every church can do something for the coming Games whether it is reaching children and young people through holiday clubs; organising community festivals; hospitality or sports events.

There are four ways you can get involved:

  • Get Set!Get Set – the national ‘Get Set’ training tour comes to Gateshead on Saturday 17th March,Get Set poster 10.30-4.30, Emmanuel College. This is a day of ideas, workshops and information designed to bring you up to speed and enable every church to form plans of how best to respond to the Olympic opportunity. For more details and on-line booking register at www.morethangold.org.uk/getset
  • Get on track – nearly every Christian organisation in the country is collaborating together on enabling churches to be ready for the coming games. There’s a huge amount of resources, packs and leaflets for you to use. The More Than Gold Resources Catalogue is now out. You can access it at www.morethangoldresources.org.uk or contact Canon John Sinclair for a copy.
  • Get Resourced - if you would like to consider hosting a team of Norwegian young people then contact the Viking Coordinator at juliawilthew@morethangold.org.uk for more details.
  • Get Advice – Our diocese is represented on the regional steering team by Canon John Sinclair and Revd Tim Sanderson. Please contact either for more advice or check out the evangelism pages of the Newcastle diocesan website, www.newcastle.anglican.org/mission-and-ministry/evangelism1.aspx
