They include Non Stipendiary (NSM), Ministers in Secular Employment (MSE), Ordained Local Ministers (OLM), and House for Duty (HfD).

These ministries may be full or part time and be exercised in parishes, chaplaincies and diocesan roles in both rural and urban settings.

Steering Group

The Steering Group was established by Bishop Frank White and is currently chaired by Elizabeth Brown.

The group works to support this growing number of ministers, and plan programmes of events including an annual conference day.

We are there to support SSMs in all settings, especially the newly ordained or those new to the diocese.

One of the main issues being explored currently is documentation for self- supporting ministers.

The current focus is on Statements of Particulars, Associate Clergy Guidelines and Work Agreements which were designed with stipendiary clergy in mind, and are not readily transferable to self-supporting ministries.

The steering group aims to re draft them better to enable self-supporting ministers to have more realistic documentation to support their varied roles.

We are also working on other areas including SSM material for the Clergy Handbook, Training and Development, Transitions and Changes of Licence, along with SSM responses to Reform and Renewal.

We are more than happy to hear from any SSM who wishes to contribute to the work of the Steering Group.

National Developments

The Revd Pauline Pearson along with over 70 delegates attended the National Consultation day on the 16th May 2015 held by the Ministry Division of the Church of England's Archbishops' Council.

Its aim was to affirm the ministry of SSMs and to look at resourcing them for the future.

Delegates were challenged to consider their ministry in the context of their wider identity.

A Bishop who himself was a former SSM reflected on the past, current and future role of SSMs as 'adding value', emphasising the role of bridging both church and society, laity and clergy along with the gift of challenge that comes with this unique position.

The Ministry Division has published its own account of the day, along with the PowerPoint presentations and other data presented, which is available at www.ministrydevelopment.org.uk/
events/29
.The Ministry Division website also carries historic and current data. Of particular interest is a map showing the proportion of ordained ministers who are Self-Supporting, by diocese, available at www.ministrydevelopment.org.uk/a_new_pattern_of_priesthood.
