Bishop Christine writes: last week's letter from the Archbishops after General Synod

Dear Friends,

You will doubtless be aware that last week’s meeting of the General Synod was very significant, in particular as we discussed the House of Bishop’s paper on Marriage and Same Sex Relationships.  In the light of the outcome of that debate, and Synod’s decision not to ‘take note’ of the Bishops’ report, the Archbishops have issued a joint letter, a copy of which you can read and/or download below, for your attention and prayers.

You may also have seen that the Archbishops have invited me to lead a new Pastoral Oversight Group.  The Group’s task will be to put into action the commitment to a radical new Christian inclusion by supporting and advising dioceses on pastoral actions and practices.  All this must happen within the current framework offered by the Church of England.  I therefore ask your prayers for all who will be involved in this work and for those people, loved and called in Christ, who feel themselves to be most deeply affected by our words and actions.

In the wider context of the Synod’s work, we have cause to thank our Newcastle General Synod reps who, in all kinds of ways, did us proud.

I would also like to affirm my commitment to ensuring that this Diocese remains a place where all are honoured and where we celebrate the wonderful diversity of God’s creation.

Grace and peace,
