Towards a Safer Church ~ Safeguarding action plan

24/02/2017

With Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser Ruth Rogan

Ruth RoganDoes your parish have a safeguarding action plan?

If the answer to this question is ‘yes’ you will know that your action plan is helping to improve your safeguarding practice in your church. It might also mean that your incumbent, parish safeguarding officer and churchwardens have given up at least two hours of their time to attend a Refreshing Safeguarding Practices which we have offered at intervals during the last two years.

Have you seen the plan? Is it publicly available? Do you know what it says and what needs to be done? If not it might be worth asking!

If the answer is ‘no’ then I urge your incumbent, parish safeguarding officer and at least one churchwarden to come along to one of the six sessions we’re running in March and April 2017 in six different deanery settings.

They will have the opportunity to work through a comprehensive checklist and identify what needs to be included in a safeguarding action plan which can be signed off by the PCC who can receive updates and progress reports on an annual or more frequent basis going forward.

The dates and times for these sessions are as follows-

  • Tuesday March 14th St Mary’s, Belford
  • Wednesday March 22nd St Mary’s Monkseaton
  • Thursday March 30th Hexham Abbey
  • Tuesday April 4th The Church Centre, Newbiggin by the Sea
  • Wednesday April 5th Holy Spirit, Denton
  • Wednesday April 26th Church House, North Shields

All the sessions run from 6.30pm - 8.30pm.

To book onto any of these sessions please contact Ruth O’Hagan at Church House: R.O’Hagan@newcastle.anglican.org or 0191 270 4115.

It is our aim that every parish should have an action plan by June 2017.

I look forward to working with parishes at these sessions so we can continue to improve our safeguarding practice across the Diocese.
