National Safeguarding Policy

Every parish should have now received a copy of the national safeguarding policy statement ‘Promoting a Safer Church’ as a small A5 booklet. It is also available on the Diocesan website safeguarding page for reading online or downloading and printing.

This policy is based on five foundations:

  • The Gospel
  • Human Rights and the Law
  • Core principles
  • Good safeguarding practice
  • Learning from the past

It also outlines six policy commitments:

  1. To promote a safer environment and culture;
  2. To safely recruit and support all those with any responsibility related to children and vulnerable adults within the Church;
  3. To respond promptly to every safeguarding concern or allegation;
  4. To care pastorally for victims/survivors of abuse and other affected persons;
  5. To care pastorally for those who are the subject of concerns or allegations of abuse and other affected persons;
  6. To respond to those that may pose a present risk to others.

Please ask your Parish Safeguarding Officer or incumbent where you can find your parish copy. It is well worth while making the time to read it and familiarise yourself with the main points. Additional copies of the policy statement can be purchased at £1.99 a copy via the Church of England publishing website:

Later in the year, a Parish Safeguarding Handbook will be produced. This will offer detailed practice guidance to ensure the effective implementation of this policy across the Church. As always, if you have any safeguarding concerns please contact me on 07825 167016 or email me at

Have a safe and enjoyable summer!
