A fond farewell to our pupils

Hundreds of youngsters from our church schools took part in a vibrant and colourful leavers’ service at Newcastle Cathedral in June.

Thirty schools from across our diocese attended the celebration event, led by Revd Ian Hennebry and Revd Jane Wood.

A procession of vivid banners and modes of transport – created by the children – launched the service.

Performances included music by Whitley Memorial First School Brass Band, a dance by pupils from Christ Church School in North Shields, a reading and drama by Corbridge First School and the Northumberland Church of England Academy, and a prayer from Morpeth All Saints School.

A dramatic entrance was made by Bishop Mark – to the surprise of the children who thought he was running late on his motorbike – as he burst into the cathedral and ran down the nave to the song Born to be wild.

Bishop Mark was then interviewed by pupils from Widdrington Grange View First School about his role as a volunteer at Northumbria Blood Bikes.

The service ended with a blessing by Bishop Mark who assured the children that ‘God will always be with you on every single day’ as they continue their school journey.
