The Queen's Diamond Jubilee: the BIG LUNCH in Balkwell
03/06/2012
The Revd Frances Wilson of St Peter's, Balkwell (North Shields) writes:
The congregation at St Peter's Church, Balkwell teamed up with the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers and Cubs to put on a BIG LUNCH on Sunday 3rd June. Invitations were put in letterboxes on the streets around the church and given out from the local newsagent.
Through the week, the children of Year 5 at Collingwood School (aided by the young people from the Wednesday Hot Chocolate club and the Beavers and Cubs) had been planting up the Oasis Garden around St Peter's which they had designed on a Coastal theme. On the Sunday the garden came alive! It will be dedicated on St Peter's day with a Festival Eucharist at 6pm when Archdeacon of Northumberland the Ven Geoff Miller will preside and preach, and formally opened at a Parade Eucharist on Sunday 1st July.

How many people would come? We had no clue! We were prepared to feed up to 120 people. In fact we fed about double that number! More came for the games, activities and sports.
Those who came remarked that nothing like this had happened on the Balkwell estate for many years. They also said; “Wouldn't it be good to do more events like this?” So now we are planning a coach trip for families in the summer...
So, not only a great day, but the beginning of more happening in our community.
