Strength and Balance
05/10/2012
St Columba’s, Wideopen, is hosting Strength and Balance classes in partnership with Age UK, the Falls Clinic at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary and local doctors.
Older people in the locality who have been hurt in falls are referred to the Falls Clinic by their GP and are then offered a place on the class, where they are taught strengthening exercises that help with balance and posture.
“When someone suffers a fall they can become fearful, and that can affect their mobility further and begin to isolate them,” says St Columba’s Vicar, the Revd Geoff Short.
“Our facilities at St Columba’s are ideal for running the Strength and Balance classes, and of course it’s a good way for people to meet each other and have some fun along the way too.
“Elderly people can now access this help in their own community. We hope to work more with Age UK and local partners.”
- On Tuesday 9 October St Columba’s will host a coffee and cake afternoon with Age UK where elderly people can talk about what they need in the local community.
