For 15 years North–East Prayer Guides, an ecumenical network of clergy and lay people, have offered the ministry of helping people explore their personal prayer. This is done in the local setting of their parish or churches and often involves working across a number of different Christian traditions. The prayer guide is primarily one who listens to the individual and how they have met God in prayer and life and then offers new ways and resources from the Christian spiritual tradition.

This can happen in various ways ranging from every day for one week to one evening per week for seven weeks. This always happens by invitation and mutual negotiation with the local people with those who coordinate for the regional network. The training is experiential and practical. It looks at listening skills, images of God and self, the many ways of praying with scripture, creative ways into prayer and finding God in all things.
