Obituary – RIP the Rev. Harry Baker
The Revd Harry Baker, who has died at the age of 93, will be remembered as a hard working parish priest, especially in Alnwick, where he served for many years. Educated at Leeds Grammar School, Harry worked as pharmacist before ordination, and also gave three years’ service as a ‘Bevin Boy’ in a coal mine during the Second World War. He served his title at Killingworth, taking on responsibility for the church at Dudley after his first year.
Incumbencies at Mickley and St Paul’s Willington Quay followed, before he moved to Alnwick in 1973 as Assistant Priest, where his insight and experience helped guide the parish through two interregnums, and was of invaluable help to the vicars with whom he worked. His ministry continued well past his retirement, although in his last few years, his health required greater care at Grovewood House.
His was very much a pastoral ministry, much appreciated for its quiet sympathy and understanding, but he was also known for his humour and his love of rugby. Fittingly, Harry’s funeral was at St Michael and All Angels’, Alnwick, where family members and friends gave thanks for his faithfulness to his priestly vocation.
