Durham Palestine Education Trust
Every year the University of Durham offers two places to Palestinian graduates for one year Masters courses. The university itself can cover the tuition fees. But academics and others have formed a charity which awards scholarships and gathers the money needed for a year’s maintenance and travel costs for the two young people. That money mostly comes from monthly donations from current and retired staff members and other supporters. They would so welcome the help that anyone else might feel moved to give! Perhaps there are readers of this newspaper who would consider getting involved? Here is something positive, if small in scale, that is being done for the future of Palestine – the skills learned at Durham taken back to that troubled land. Contact the secretary of ‘Durham Palestine Educational Trust’, Archaeology Department, Durham University, Durham DH1 3LE. They also receive any books we might like to give or resale - especially academic ones. Email: durham.palestine@durham.ac.uk or www.dpet.org.uk

The London Olympics are coming – just 1000 days away!
The Olympic Games in 2012 will be a 'once in a lifetime' experience for our nation and it seems certain that sport will be a dominant theme in the media and in many people's minds.
Our national church leaders have formed an organisation 'More Than Gold' to help the churches relate to the opportunities that the Olympic Games will afford for mission and ministry, and Archbishop Rowan has appointed Duncan Green to be the coordinator for the Church of England.
'More Than Gold' is a group to inspire, connect and coordinate Christians in the delivery of events leading up to, during and beyond the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This could include arranging activities such as coaching sessions for young people in football, rugby or cricket with a Christian message before or after the Games, or in organising local street parties or 'big screen events' at the opening or closing of the Olympic Games themselves.
At a day event in Harrogate led by David Wilson the CEO of 'More than Gold' we heard about the major contribution the churches played in previous games, including Athens and Sydney. It is hoped to pilot public events in our Diocese during the World Cup next year - especially using the latest initiative from 'Higher Sports' - 'Higher Sports Football' – to discover what is practical and effective and so look ahead with ideas and plans to engage with the mood of the summer of 2012.
Three years hence may seem a long way off, but if we are to respond to this unique opportunity in our life-time, we must begin to form strategies and make plans. We urge PCCs and chaplaincies to visit the website http://www.morethangold.org.uk and put the 2012 Olympics on their agendas.
