St Hilda’s Trust makes grants to organisations for charitable purposes, although these organisations need not necessarily be registered charities. Typically these are smaller scale church or community projects, benefitting the lives of children or young people in deprived communities.

The objectives of the trust are:

The furtherance of such legally charitable purposes in connection with the Church of England and the Diocese of Newcastle as the Managing Trustees of the Trust may think proper and in particular, but not so as to limit or restrict the furtherance of such purposes, the relief either generally or individually of persons who are in conditions of need, hardship and distress within the Diocese of Newcastle.

The trustee board meets at least three times a year; around New Year, Easter and harvest time. When possible, the trustees are pleased to visit projects which have special interest or benefit to the churches or communities concerned.

The Bishop of Newcastle is the ex-officio Chair of the Trustee Board and there are five Managing Trustees:

  • The Rt Revd Christine Hardman, Bishop of Newcastle (Chair)
  • The Revd Christine Brown
  • Mr Julian Brown
  • The Revd Canon Alan Craig
  • Canon Roger Styring
  • Dr Margaret Wilkinson

St Hilda’s Trust was set up in December 1988 from the proceeds of the sale of St Hilda’s Approved School and Community Home. The trust is a registered charity (no. 500962).
