Equipping- for those working with young people
Equipping—are the Church of England's new Core Competencies in youth work . They are a response to the National Youth Strategy.
The competencies are achieved through a set of training sessions and the completion of a portfolio and lead to achieving a Bishop's or Archbishops' Certificate in youth work—depending on the level you want to achieve. To receive your certificate you will have to attend one of the courses and complete your portfolio over a period time (to suit you). This is basic level training and would be a natural progression into the Church Colleges' Certificate in youth work.
Questions
I've been working with young people for years, why do I need to do this now?
As the Government moves closer to making training compulsory for all who work with children and young people, the Church of England has (through the Certificates) both the foundation for this in place and is working to achieve best practice. In many cases the Certificates will provide the opportunity to highlight the good work you are already doing.
I have already done some training, why do I need to do any more?
The Bishop's and Archbishops' Certificates are designed to be systematic in their approach providing the opportunity to look in greater depth at the range of issues concerning work with young people.
In the future, those who deliver training to youth workers will be encouraged to have the Core Competencies in mind so it will be easier to include written or other work in a Bishop's or Archbishops' Certificate portfolio. Once the course has been established he hope to resolve how the the training you have already done contributes to your Certificate status.
I'm already stretched for time with other commitments, will I be able to fit this in?
We will try to make the delivery of seminars as flexible as possible, offering courses on Saturdays and also on weekday evenings. Each course is designed to give youth workers time to reflect on the seminars they attend and to compile their portfolio with support from a tutor.

What is Staying Alive 2009?

Seahouses is a Youth House which has some space for tents. Depending on how many of you come will depend on where you sleep! It has basic facilities, showers and bathrooms. Probably, groups who come with leaders will camp and those of you who don't have a youth leader with you will be in the House. More details to follow.
What do we get for our money?
All meals – from Thursday supper to Sunday lunch as well as any materials you collect as part of the weekend. But never fear – you can spend your money in the Coffee Bar.
What if my youth leader can't/won't come?
Don't worry there will be enough suitably trained leaders to ensure you are safe!
Remember – space is limited – so first come first served and we may have to limit the number that come from any one church
