Sustaining donations (COVID-19)
As much of our traditional giving still occurs through envelope or cash donations during church services, many people who give in this way are now unable to make their usual offering to support their church. Some people who give in this way may not be able to go online to make electronic donations so it may be helpful to encourage them to think about how they could still maintain their level of giving during this time of social isolation. You could post information on your Facebook page or telephone your envelope givers. Please do not hand deliver newsletters as this puts both yourself and vulnerable people at risk of catching/spreading the virus. Post can be used if there is no other alternative.
Suggested wording for Envelope Givers:
Churches across the whole Diocese are reliant upon the generosity of their parishioners. If you usually donate by using envelopes and making cash donations you may find that this option is now closed off to you due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We understand that people will wish to continue to be generous during this time of isolation. One way that you could continue to do so is to set aside your usual weekly offering and make a larger gift when churches reopen. We thank you in advance for your continued support and generosity during this difficult period.
Switching from Envelope Giving to Standing Orders or Direct Debit
With the suspension of public worship and social distancing measures, churches will see a reduction in cash donations, so this could be a time to encourage those who make their regular gifts by cash in envelopes to consider giving by standing order or direct debit instead, even if on a temporary basis. A template form for setting up a standing order can be found here. The form can be sent directly to your church or vicarage (provide details on your website) for you to process.
We also have the Parish Giving Scheme, which is a direct debit alternative which the Diocese is encouraging. There is further information on our website about this scheme, and for a conversation with our Generous Giving Advisers please contact Andrew or Joanne.
New telephone service for the Parish Giving Scheme to set-up direct debits
The Parish Giving Scheme has launched a new telephone service, designed to enable prospective donors to set up a regular direct debit donation to their parish over the phone.
The service will operate weekdays between 9am - 5pm. Please encourage prospective donors to set up a regular gift by calling the dedicated telephone line 0333 002 1271. Callers will need to have the PGS code for their parish to hand to guarantee the gift goes to the correct parish.
Suggested wording for church newsletters for switching to Standing Orders/Direct Debit:
Churches across the whole Diocese are reliant upon the generosity of their parishioners. If you usually donate using the envelope system you may wish to change to a different method during the Coronavirus pandemic, as we understand that people will wish to continue to be generous during this time of isolation. There are different ways in which you can do this, such as setting up a standing order or a direct debit scheme (such as the Parish Giving Scheme which started in 2016). Many people across the Diocese use these donation mechanisms and they are both tried and tested and secure. Please contact your Church Treasurer or Finance Officer (give name and contact number) for more information.
