Royal Northern Sinfonia on your doorstep
Hear Royal Northern Sinfonia, the professional orchestra of the North East, in your local church this October, this time with a programme including a special ensemble arrangement of Mahler’s ‘Titan’ symphony. Feel the full force and energy of this mighty symphony from just fifteen players absolutely giving it their all. Wagner’s intensely personal Siegfried Idyll and Strauss’ opulent Capriccio Sextet complete this programme of three giants of classical music.
Royal Northern Sinfonia undertake four regional tours of churches in the North of England each year, including the ever-popular Christmas by Candlelight concerts. This autumn, join us for Mahler One: Titan in St George’s, Cullercoats (Thursday 17 October, 7.30pm), St Cuthbert’s, Darlington (Friday 18 October, 7.30pm) or Hexham Abbey (Sunday 20 October, 3pm).
Tickets for each concert are £15, or £5 for Under-18s and are available from Sage Gateshead’s Box Office on 0191 443 4661 or at sagegateshead.com. If we have any tickets left there may be some available on the door, but early booking is recommended! We hope to see you there.

The Iona Community is delighted to announce that it will be running an Autumn residential programme based at the St Columba Hotel on Iona. Against the vermilion and purple sunrises and softer pace of the island in Autumn, these retreats offer the chance to pause and take stock of life – to gather in what is ripe, to clear the ground and prepare for what lies ahead.
There will be three exceptional people leading this year’s programmes: poet and award-winning translator of Rilke and Meister Eckhart, Mark Burrows; long-time Wild Goose Resource Member, Jo Love; and art historian and popular speaker Debbie Lewer – who also led our wonderful Easter 2018 retreat.
Dates are as follows
18th – 23rd October:
Ripening in Wisdom: Elder Poets as Sages of the Harvest of Life
Mark Burrows, Protestant University of Applied Sciences, Bochum
23rd – 28th October:
Kicking Leaves and Kindling Fires
Jo Love, Wild Goose Resource Group
28th Oct – 2nd Nov
Lightening the Dark, Darkening the Light: Exploring the Shadows of Art and Faith
Debbie Lewer, University of Glasgow
Fuller descriptions of the programmes can be found by visiting https://iona.org.uk/island-centres/bookings/ae2019/ and following the links there.
Based at the lovely St. Columba Hotel, each programme is 5 nights; prices start at £735 per person and include continental breakfast, lunch, dinner, accommodation and programme charges. Places can be reserved via the St Columba website or by phoning the hotel on 44 (0)1681 700 304
