The Bishop of Newcastle, the Right Reverend Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, is pleased to announce the appointment of new Lay and Non-Residentiary Canons at Newcastle Cathedral.
Lay Canons
- Sally Milner
- Ian Roberts
- Robert Gardener
Non-Residentiary Canons
- Revd Paul Baker
- Revd Rachel Scheffer
- Revd Charlotte Osborn
The new Canons will be installed at the Patronal Festival of the Cathedral at 4pm on Saturday 5th December, the Feast of St Nicholas.
Bishop Helen-Ann said: “I’m delighted that Sally, Ian, Robert, Paul, Rachel and Charlotte have agreed to be our new Lay and Non-Residentiary Canons and I very much look forward to the expertise and wisdom they will bring to both the Cathedral and the life of our wider diocese.”
The Dean of Newcastle, the Very Reverend Lee Batson, said: "I am delighted that Robert, Sally, Ian, Rachel, Paul and Charlotte have accepted the Bishop’s invitation to join the College of Canons at the Cathedral. We increasingly see the College as a source of wisdom in the life of the Cathedral, and particularly as it continues to inhabit its role as a resource for the whole Diocese – and acting as a beacon of light for the area we serve. We are looking forward to all that our new Canons will bring to our discussions and the development of our life together.”
The College of Canons is one of the main ways in which the Cathedral can hear how it can best support the wider work of mission and ministry in this Diocese.
The Revd Simon Dowson, recently announced as the Bishop of Newcastle’s new Chaplain, will also begin his role as Minor Canon of Newcastle Cathedral at this service.
