School Leavers 2020

Moving On: a video service for all our children graduating this summer from primary and first school

Bishop Christine leads the tributes in this virtual service for schoolchildren in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland about to graduate from our primary and first schools.

Hundreds of children from Church of England schools would normally gather this month for a special service at Newcastle Cathedral, celebrating as they prepare to move to middle or secondary school.

But due to the Covid lockdown, the annual Leavers’ Service for around 1000 children has sadly had to be cancelled.

While we can't hold our usual service this year, we hope this online service for the children and their families will be an encouragement to you all. Do sing along and join in! (All contributions included with their kind permission.)

'Jesus, be with all of us who are facing ending things and are facing new new adventures, especially with our school leavers as they say goodbye to the school they have been in and go with excitement to their new schools. Especially be with them at moments when they feel scared or anxious or worried. Help them to know deeply that they need not be afraid, for you are with them. We make this prayer in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.'

THE RIGHT REVEREND CHRISTINE HARDMAN, BISHOP OF NEWCASTLE

'Dear Jesus, thank you that you go with us through uncertainty as well as through the things that we know. Please bless each and every one of us as we step into the brilliant future that you have for us. Amen.'

THE RIGHT REVEREND MARK TANNER, BISHOP OF BERWICK

'Our Leavers’ Service at the end of the school year is always an exciting way for all our primary and first schools to get together in way that doesn’t happen at any other time of the year. It has become a traditional rite of passage!'
