Environment

As Christs disciples, we share a welcome duty of stewardship towards all of Gods Creation. This is particularly expressed in the fifth Mark of Mission agreed by the Anglican Consultative Council, which directs all Christians to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the earth.

We believe that:

  • Our relationship with the natural environment is integral to our relationship with God
  • Good ecology is a matter of social justice and so is central to what it means to be a Christian
  • Care for the environment should be a key component of Christian living individually, as churches and as a diocese

Our Environmental Policy expresses our commitment to live out these principles, in:

  • Our worship and teaching
  • Our activities, land and buildings
  • Our strategy and planning
  • Our engagement with local communities, government and businesses

We were due to hold an Open Synod Forum on Saturday 21st March at the Northumberland Church of England Academy and the Bishops Officer for the Environment, the Revd Mark Nash-Williams, had pulled together a super agenda and workshops to help us focus our efforts on how we respond to environmental issues that we face.

However, as you may also appreciate, we are facing a more pressing issue in the form of coronavirus and how we respond to the ever changing situation. We have therefore taken the decision to postpone this Open Synod Forum until later this year.

Thank you to all who have worked with Mark to prepare for this Open Synod Forum. We will circulate a new date as soon as we have that confirmed.
