Shepherds Dene Retreat House

Shepherds Dene serves the Dioceses of Newcastle and Durham as diocesan retreat house.

It provides a space to think, a chance to grow and to walk more closely with God. Guests of all denominations and faiths, and those of no faith, are welcome.

The house is an Edwardian country house, built in the Arts and Crafts style, and set in 26 acres of grounds. The estate was given to the Church of England in 1945 to be used as a

It is a spiritual place for peace and quiet and sometimes for fun and celebration as well.

In the last few years, the house has been refurbished to provide some ensuite bedrooms and the grounds have been brought back to the former glory. There is Wi-Fi throughout.

“Those who come to Shepherds Dene for knowledge will find it and those who come for rest will go away refreshed.”

The House is ideal for retreats, small conferences and meetings, within easy access of Durham and Newcastle.

It can be hired as a whole – which gives guests the privacy to make themselves at home – or in part, for smaller groups and individuals seeking a meeting room or a private room to study.

There are 20 acres of grounds to explore from formal lawns to a woodland stream – where deer can often be seen. There is a labyrinth that can be walked for meditation or just for fun.

There are plenty of spots for quiet reflection, as well as a croquet lawn and volleyball court.
