Easter Banner of Hope success at St Mary’s, Fawdon

First published on: 20th April 2022

As is the Easter tradition in most churches, a cross will be erected adorned with flowers that often last only one of the six weeks of Easter, and are then replaced or substituted for pedestals of flowers.

Saint Mary’s, Fawdon decided in the summer of 2021 that although they were in interregnum they would launch a project, to not only reconnect with their wider community but to also create a liturgical evangelism event that was Covid secure. This project was named the ‘Banner of Hope’.

They asked the wider community and those that attend Saint Mary’s, Fawdon to knit/crochet flowers, or for those that do not profess the skill to knit this could be done using a fork!

They knew they were going to need a lot of flowers of all colours and varieties. So, they launched the project in September and asked for all blooms to be in for the start of lent. During lent they had a group that met every Tuesday evening to assemble the Easter Banner of Hope.

They have had 875 donations from across the community and congregation.

This fabulous piece of art will not only be displayed this Easter but for many more showing everyone God’s message of hope.

If you would like to come and see their banner of hope art work please visit Saint Mary’s the Virgin Fawdon any Sunday during Easter. Services start at 10.30am.
